I am being unconventional here by giving away my impression of this book right at the start but it just goes to show how much I appreciated it. Kohinoor - The Story of the World's Most Infamous Diamond is authored by William Dalrymple and Anita Anand and, before I even get to the summary I have to say, it is a must read. The book is not a mere recitation of what conspired with the diamond, but is supported by valid documentation and references to assist the narrative. The book is divided into two major parts. The first one is a tale narrated by William Dalrymple describing the pre-h...

Buy From Amazon.in Title:  The Spy Author: Paulo Coelho Genre: Fiction, Drama, Biography Pages: 208 Publisher: Penguin Random House India Private Limited ISBN- 13:    978-0670089536 Rating: 4/5 The Spy  by Paulo Coelho is based on the personal life of Mata Hari, the famous exotic dancer. The book begins with the execution of Mata Hari by the French firing squad when she is found guilty of being a spy. The story then takes us back to when she was a married woman and how she begins her journey from being a penniless new comer in Paris to a rich and popular exotic dancer who seemed to have the most powerful people at her feet. Her dancing and beauty stood out from the rest because of her independent way of life. And how, during the first world war, she was found guilty of committing treason, albeit of no fault of hers, and was sentenced to be executed. The book is a short read highlighting only the personal high and lows of Mata Hari. The narrative is ...

Chickens Eat Pasta : Escape To Umbria

Buy From Amazon.in Title:  Chickens Eat Pasta : Escape To Umbria Author: Clare Pedrick Genre: Autobiography, Memoirs Pages: 225 Publisher: Matador ASIN :  B012GZXOPY Rating: 3.7/5 This book is an autobiography of the author, Clare Pedrick. Now, I don't usually read autobiographies; it is not my cup of tea but this one particularly interested me. The title is catchy enough but other than that, the mere mention of Italy, particularly the rural side, made me want to read it. Just out of a relationship, the author is looking for a change from her boring routine in England. She watches a chicken eating spaghetti on TV (hence the title) and when in the newspaper she finds Italian properties for sale, she decides to move to the village, Umbria, in Italy. She resigns her job and travels to Italy. She buys a ruin of a house there and goes on to develop it. The book talks about the challenges she faces as an outsider while renovating her house and how she deals with the ...

The Silent Scream

Buy from Amazon.in Rating: 4/5 This is my first review of a non-fiction book. The author, Siddartha Garg, approached me very kindly for a review and when I was informed that the book dealt with the rising incidents of sexual assaults in children, I decided to read and review it. So here goes. The book begins with Harshita's story and how she was brutally molested and scarred for life. There are several other stories of children of various ages across different cities in India to show the many ways children are subject to this atrocity. The book also contains an interview of a psychiatrist and child counselor who describes why and how these crimes take place. A detailed account of the types of sexual abuses and the kind of perpetrators that are involved are mentioned. Apart from recognizing the signs of danger, the book also describes how and where these perpetrators originate from, whom you should be careful of, the reason behind such crimes, the repercussions of...

Wise and Otherwise : A Salute to Life

Image
Rating: 3.5/5 Title:  Wise and Otherwise : A Salute to Life Author: Sudha Murthy Genre: Fiction Pages: 232 Publisher: Penguin Books ISBN-13:   9780143062226 Yet another splendid book by Sudha Murthy, this time with real incidents out of her experience closet. As is the case with the rest of her books that I've had the pleasure reading, this one too leaves the reader with a distinct humbleness and sometimes, with a disturbing truth. This book is a set of short stories (true occurrences), that took place with the author herself. As the strong, open minded and always-ready-to-help woman that she is, Mrs. Murthy's stance in majority of these stories highlights the plight of the common man/woman in India. Whether it is a rank holder with a poor financial background or an educated and working married woman, the height of helplessness is so prominent that it moved me to tears. On the other hand, there are also tales of those helped by the author reminiscing and be...
