Book Review: The Haunting of Barry's Lodge

Image
Title: The Haunting of Barry's Lodge Author: Annie Walters Genre: Fiction, Horror, Thriller Pages: 218 Publisher: CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform Rating: 3.5/5 The Haunting of Barry's Lodge   by Annie Walters is a quick, engaging horror/thriller with settings that are very typical and anticipated. A quintessential ghost story to curl up with would rather describe it perfectly. Alfred is an aspiring author who has been trying to write a book since years. But due to his familial responsibilities, he ends up doing odd jobs without making any real progress with his book. When his father in law suggests that Alfred spend a week at the isolated motel, Barry's Lodge, he jumps at the opportunity. A week without disturbances should be enough to come up with a draft. But little does Alfred know that Barry's Lodge has a disturbing past and he realizes it soon as it doesn't allow him a moment's peace...

Book Review: Retrograde

Image
Title: Retrograde Author: Peter Cawdron Genre: Fiction, Sci Fi Pages: 259 Publisher: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Rating: 4/5 Retrograde   by Peter Cawdron is a science fiction based on the lives and events surrounding the scientists in Mars. It is unlike what I have ever read before (because I usually don't go for science fiction), but after the movie/book The Martian , I guess interest levels have piqued regarding the subject and that's exactly the reason why I agreed to review this book. So, here goes. The story is set in the future. A hundred and twenty experts, from various fields and countries, have been deployed on Mars by NASA. When there is an attack on Earth, discrepancies arise among them, not knowing whom to trust. Everyone thinks they are safe in their respective modules but when information is found tampered, all hell breaks loose. The summary seems very short than what I would normally give out but I am doing that on purpose. The...

Title: Origin Author: Dan Brown Genre: Fiction, Thriller, Mystery Pages: 544 Publisher: Bantam Press (Penguin Random House) Rating: 4/5 Although I wasn't the first ones to pre order this book, I had   Origin   on the top of my TBR since I knew of its publishing date. I got it on time and the sight of the large hardcover stirred up my reader's appetite and before I knew  it, I was head on into its exciting, deep labyrinth. Robert Langdon is back to what he does best. Solving a mystery. Only this time, it doesn't involve religious symbols or codes. Langdon is invited to an event in Bilbao by Edmond Kirsch, a friend and former student, where shocking discoveries would be revealed by him. Edmond claims that these discoveries would change the course of mankind and especially affect the religious institutions all over the world. People from all over the world watch as the presentation goes live, when ...

Book Review: Wants and Desires - A Psychological Thriller

Image
Title: Wants and Desires - A Psychological Thriller Author: Chitrangada Mukherjee Genre: Fiction, Thriller, Murder Pages: 134 Publisher: Chitrangada Mukherjee Rating: 4/5 A classic who-dun-it with a subtle but admirably mysterious background,  Wants and Desires by Chitrangada Mukherjee is a good psychological thriller, perfect for a rainy weekend. Sukanto Bhattacharjee dies suddenly soon after his 35th birthday in his house. He is found in his study, with his head on the desk and arms wrapped around it, as if sleeping peacefully. He leaves behind his mother, his wife and friends and they are all suspects, according to the police. A letter is found hidden under a crystal jug in the study, which doesn't seem quite like a suicide note but definitely hints towards it. The suspects, each with their own vice, talk kindly of the deceased but one of them is the murderer. If it was a murder after all. I was so proud reading this book. Ou...

Book Review: Sleep Savannah Sleep

Title: Sleep Savannah Sleep Author: Alistair Cross Genre: Fiction, Thriller, Horror, Occult Pages: 288 Publisher: CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform Rating: 4/5 Sleep Savannah Sleep   by Alistair Cross is a book in the horror/occult genre which I don't usually prefer. While Amber begins adapting to this new environment, Brent, a recluse, finds it difficult to do so. Jason starts his massage therapy business and finds a client or two immediately. Among friendly neighbors, new friends and temper tantrums by Brent, Jason begins to settle down when one day, Savannah is rep...

Book Review: The Dark Net

Image
Title:  The Dark Net Author: Benjamin Percy Genre: Fiction, Mystery, Thriller Pages: 272 Publisher: Hodder & Stoughton Rating: 4/5 The Dark Net   by Benjamin Percy , releasing today, is a cyber thriller that is sure to send shivers down your spine. Although the summary suggested an internet underworld, I found it moving more towards Horror/Occult genre. But nevertheless, the book is too thrilling to put down. Lela is a journalist in Portland who takes her work seriously and doesn't feel the need to update herself with technological improvements that surround her. Her sister, Cheryl, and niece, Hannah, are the only family she has. The book begins with Hannah being fitted with a prosthetic pair of glasses that will help her see. Although Lela promises Cheryl and Hannah to celebrate together that evening, Lela is caught up with a mysterious discovery that threatens her life. Title:  The Sweet Oil Of Vitriol - A Tom Glaze Hit (The Tom Glaze Series Book 1) Author: Daniel Eagleton Genre: Fiction, Crime, Thriller Pages: 221 Rating: 2.5/5 The Sweet Oil Of Vitriol   is the first in the Tom Glaze series. Published in February this year, the book is an action/crime thriller which, sadly, didn't thrill me at all. Thomas is a Mossad agent and when a sanctioned mission fails terribly, he is ousted by his own organisation even after having risked his life. When Thomas realizes that not only is he the prime suspect in the case but is also blamed for the failure, he is desperate for a comeback. His handler Yakov, thus, provides him another chance. The head of the African Union, Jacob Okonjo, is the target this time and Thomas prepares months before by working undercover as a waiter at the hotel in London, where the Union head would be staying. But would months of doing repeated odd jobs and serving people waver his dedication to the mission? Woul...

Book Review : Exodus '95

Buy from Amazon.com Buy from Amazon.in Title:  Exodus '95 Author: Kfir Luzzatto Genre: Fiction, Mystery, Thriller Pages: 309  Publisher: Pine Ten Rating: 3.8/5 Today I have a review of the very recently released  Exodus '95  by Kfir Luzzatto. The blurb said something about Moses's staff and discovering it, and that's it, I was sold! I love stories where there is hunting for relics and any kind of historical conspiracies. So, when the author so kindly asked me if I would review this book, I said 'Yes!' instantly! OK then, let's get to the review. Claire Williams is a graphical designer in New York and learns something startling from her neighbour, Jack. He is a father figure to her and is dying but before that, he hands over a secret. The fact that the magical Moses's staff exists and that it is stored in a box that Jack himself had designed. He not only gives the key to the box to Clai...
