Title: Engadine Aerie (Hardy Durkin Travel Mystery Book 5)
Author: Bluette Matthey
Genre: Fiction, Mystery, Murder, Crime
Pages: 208
Publisher: Blue Shutter Publishing

Rating: 4/5

Engadine Aerie by Bluette Matthey is the fifth book in the Hardy Durkin travel mystery series. The book is a standalone, thus reading of previous ones in the series isn't necessary. Travel and mystery are two words that I'm terribly fond of, so needless to say, I was engaged throughout.

Set in the beautiful Engadine valley of Switzerland, the annual ski marathon has gathered enthusiasts from all over the world. The protagonist, Hardy Durkin, is a ski tour operator who has arrived at St. Moritz to help his friend start up her ski tour business. He is immediately attracted to the middle eastern skier from the group, Maryam, who is the wife of an Abu Dhabi elite. When Durkin and Maryam find a body buried in the snow, little does anyone realize that it is the beginning of a series of unfortunate events. Durkin is faced with weaponised drones, an illegal arms deal, poisons and is successful in stopping a terror attack in the nick of time. With suspects within the skiing group itself, Durkin follows his instincts and is often found a step ahead of the police, finding himself at the right place at the right time. But then, someone decides to end Durkin's interference once and for all.

First things first. The location chosen for this story is fantastic! Set in the quaint Engadine valley where peace prevails, murders and bombings make for an unusual but exciting story. Glimpses of the great white Alps and of the St. Moritz town are generously provided for us to soak up. The narration is to the point, perfect for a murder and crime story. The action and pace of the story are well balanced, making it a smooth read.

The protagonist's character is bold and sharp, apparently due to his previous experiences with bad guys and bad situations. The other characters are just adequately described. I found this book to be fast and absorbing. It is a quick read but with the enchanting Swiss backdrop and curious events, I really didn't want the book to end.

I cannot think of anything that was not likable except for the one tiny little thing. Maybe I was expecting a complete closure towards the end. It doesn't leave the story incomplete but there were these tiny stray ends almost ready to be tied up, you know? Again, a slight expectation from my side and not something that affects the story in any way. So, no harm done. The book ends with the hope that the next Hardy Durkin's would be as exciting and adrenaline pumping as this one was, if not more.

If you've read the previous books in the series, you probably know that the author sets his stories in lesser known places, which is so awesome! Awaiting the author to take us to another exotic locale in his next adventure!

Last word. Like Switzerland? Like murders and crimes? If yes, then grab this book, sit back and enjoy!

Book Review: Fall Irmgard: Operation Irmgard

Title: Fall Irmgard : Operation Irmgard
Author: Rand Charles
Genre: Fiction, Literature
Pages: 440
Publisher: Penurious Publishing

Rating: 4/5

Fall Irmgard: Operation Irmgard by Rand Charles is a story set during the Second World War. Its been long since I have come across a complex and involving book such as this and I, for one, thoroughly enjoyed it.

The year is 1941 in German occupied Paris. A German businessman, Konni Ritter, is murdered and the brutality is witnessed by one of his friends, Addie Bridges, an American waiting to return home. She is held back for inquiry by Major Rolf von Gerz, a German army officer who is in charge of the case. Konni was a sweet and friendly person according to all his friends and acquaintances and it comes as a shock when he is murdered on the Alexander III bridge. Along with a Gestapo, Rolf, with Addie as a suspect, set about to find the murderer amidst the cacophony of the war. There are a string of  other suspects too, of course. A night club manager, a stock broker, a french gangster and some of Konni's women friends. The trick, as is with every mystery, is to get to the bottom of it all.

Wow! It took me a very long time to finish this book. It is a complex story with so many different characters, that I sometimes found it difficult to keep up, honestly. The book starts off with what happens in one day in the lives of each of the different characters. And only then, the story takes off. I want the readers to make a note here. The book is long and complex but by no means, boring or dull. In fact, it reminded me of one of  my favorite classics, A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens. As many may know, that book has a lot of character building and plot description and then with each passing event, the story falls into place. That is the vibe of the layout in this book too and if you've loved reading A Tale of Two Cities, you'll definitely love this one.

OK, to the technicalities now. As I said, loads of characters, each perfectly described and thought of. Extravagant details of the setting, read occupied Paris, is provided which is absolutely interesting and engaging. The character of Rolf and Addie are linked romantically. Rolf is this stern officer on the outside with a soft heart within. Addie, on the other hand, is charming and bold, an American in love with Paris. The character of Konni Ritter, too, is given enough background before he is killed. Everyone from the rich foreign girls to the club owner is beautifully explained, as if the author has picked these characters from real life.

Fall Irmgard: Operation Irmgard is an intense and complex tale with pleasurable intricacies that make for a wonderful read. With a sophisticated touch of classical writing, it is sure to attract anyone interested in the classical fiction genre, something that is rarely found these days. A perfect blend of history and mystery (wow, that rhymes!), if you're someone who likes historical fiction, you probably shouldn't miss this.

Prime suspects are a hedge-fund billionaire with a thing for young girls and a bartender with a sketchy past and a ten-out-of-ten creep factor.
